Physical Education Electives
Parents of students in grades one through eight are encouraged to include some type of physical activity in their curriculum. This may include local sports such as Little League, swimming lessons, family hikes, or any number of other possibilities. You may want to consider Linda Haught’s Fitness Club. Because of the wide diversity of options at these lower grades and the difficulty of grading such a “class,” the report card will not include a physical education grade in grades one through eight.
Graduation requirements for high school, however, require that a student earn a minimum of 1 credit for P.E. or health. It is suggested that this credit be earned during the student’s freshman and/or sophomore year. This credit can be earned in a variety of ways.
- The unit of credit can be earned using the BJU Press Health textbook over the course of a school year. The course would be taught 5 times per week for approximately 50 minutes per session.
- A half unit of credit can be earned by actively participating in a training program (tennis lessons, weight-training sessions, etc.) that meets at least 3 times per week for approximately 50 minutes per session during the course of the school year.
- A quarter unit of credit can be earned by participating in an organized sport for a regular season.
- A quarter unit of credit can be earned by participating in a Bob Jones University sports camp.
- Credit can be earned by participating in any of the following fitness programs. Once again, the requirement for earning a full unit of
credit is that the student participate 5 times per week for approximately 50 minutes per session during the course of the school year. (A half
unit of credit can be given if the student participates 2-3 times per week rather than 5 times.)

Whatever your high school student decides to do to fulfill his P.E. requirement, you must submit your plan to the AHE office prior to the beginning of the semester on the Elective and Transfer Reporting Form. At the end of the semester, please report a grade earned for P.E. participation on the Grade Reporting Form. The AHE reserves the right to disapprove any request for credit not submitted prior to the beginning of the semester or any request which, in the opinion of the administrator, does not meet the standard of the program.
